Removing Idols in your life

One of the hardest spiritual battles men face is the battle against idols. An idol is anything that takes the place in our hearts that belongs to God. An idol in our present day is typically not a statue or image, but can be success, money, comfort, approval, entertainment, and pride. The Bible is clear, as stated in Exodus 20:3: “You shall have no other gods before me.”

Idols are dangerous because they slowly shift our focus away from God. What we prioritize with our time, energy, and attention reveals what we truly worship. When something begins to control our decisions or define our identity more than God does, it has become an idol in our lives. 1 John 5:21 states, “Dear children, keep yourselves from idols.”

Removing idols requires honesty and surrender. A man must be willing to ask God to reveal the things that have taken HIS place in our hearts. Removing idols often requires laying down habits, priorities, or desires that compete with our relationship with God. Psalm 139:23–24 reads “Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”

When idols are removed, our hearts become aligned with God. Our priorities shift, our worship becomes genuine, and our lives begin to reflect God’s purpose. God is not interested in being one priority; God is the priority. When men put God in His rightful place, everything else in life begins to fall into the right order.
